An upper endoscopy, also known as an esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), is a procedure that uses a thin
tube with a lens—an endoscope—to examine the upper part of the GI tract. The endoscope travels down the esophagus and stomach, to the first part of the small intestine, the duodenum. An upper endoscopy is performed to evaluate symptoms such as difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), chronic heartburn, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. A colonoscopy involves passing an endoscope (colonoscope) through the GI tract to the large intestine (colon).
A colonoscopy is performed to screen the colon for polyps and colon cancer, and to evaluate symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, and rectal bleeding. We will evaluate your symptoms and suggest if a colonoscopy is the right procedure for you. To learn more about this procedure, click here.
